It's half past one in the morning, 1ºC out there in the countryside and my friends S and J are putting on their coats to go and see the stars from the road in front of our house. We're in a small town for the weekend and it's freezing. So I'm waiting here, sitting on a cushion next to the window (one of those long windows from ceiling to floor), wrapped in a blanket and watching the low yellow half moon through a telescope :)

It's being a wonderful weekend and a wonderful break before the beginning of another stressful week~

2011 has begun with a little bit of everything.

I had a lovely Christmas (with homemade tiramisú included)* and a lot of wonderful presents for Epiphany, which means I finally got the DVD with special features of Sherlock Holmes and three awesome books I don't know when I could read properly because this year presents itself as a tough one. On the one hand, my employment contract with university has expired which I knew it had to happen but it's depressing all the same. And on the other hand, I ought to finish writing my PhD thesis before August. That may look like a reasonable deadline (one I decided, indeed) but I feel stressed out already. Ugh... I'd rather not think too much about it but people all around seem delighted reminding me every chance they have. It's tiring and it's just January...

That's one of the reasons I chose to spend the evening of New Year's Day watching comforting films, beginning with Frank Capra's You can't take it with you. It was years since I watched it and the philosophy of that film always cheers me up :D A Jeeves and Wooster book also helped a lot~

And to keep on with the great things of these last days, thank you so much [livejournal.com profile] louiselux for the pretty card! I loved it! <3 I'm sorry that in the end I couldn't send you one back :(

Anyway, I hope you all began the year with good and shinning moments. Let's hope 2011 will be a very good one!

*If some of you are interested, and as it was me who prepared the tiramisú, here it is the recipe )

Should be training right now but I don't feel like it, too lazy today -...my sensei would smack me on the head but, in my defense, I'll say I had to wake up too early for my taste and it's awfully windy to go anywhere. On the other hand, it's being a weird summer: nor vacation abroad with friends like other years and, surprisingly enough, nor archaeological excavation either. I've been working there every summer during the last eight years, with its highs and lows, so it's kind of disconcerting to think about an August working at home. Don't get me wrong, I'm gonna miss some people but it's liberating to count with more time to work on my thesis: I'm reaching that point where all I want is to finish the damn big thing. And this way I could book a few days to relax.

And yet, of course I have my little pleasures: Of course, I'm utterly in love with the new BBC Sherlock XD Can't remember who said it but it's a great moment to be a Holmes' fan! <3 I couldn't imagine I was going to like Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman so much! they're perfect for the roles and Oh, all the slash potential:

-It's fantastic.
-Do you know you do that out loud?
-Sorry, I'll shut up.
-No, it's...fine.

♥♥♥

Which reminds me, [livejournal.com profile] sadynax is killing me with her lovely chibis ♥

I'm also enjoying immensely the amount of fics this series's already producing~

But, here, have two Holmes/Watson big bang fics I loved (not Sherlock's universe):

-A study in midnight: crossover with A Study in Emerald.

-Roll away your stone

Now, I really should try to be productive for a little while longer...

It's been a nice weekend. Springtime, more light, less coats, old trains and spectacular views. I've been on a trip to the Pyrenees, just to the point where you can walk across the mountains to France.

The thing is there's an old train (today it has only three wagons) that goes from my city to the ancient station that allowed communications with France through the Pyrenees in the first half of last century. Nowadays the real station from 1928 is closed and the train takes four hours to make a two hours route by car. It's been said that the train is going to be cancelled and it's a shame because the journey is really beautiful. So me and my friends decided to use the ancient transport before it desappears.

By chance we chose the anniversary of the day the station was closed 40 years ago. In the end we could put a shiny ribbon on the wrought-iron gate with a written wish to see the station reopened again :) The result, when you looked at the sky, was like being somewhere near Tibet with the old building in front, the snowed peaks behind and the bright colours of the ribbons.

Raindrops on roses, whiskers on kittens, bright copper kettles, warm woolen mittens, wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings... )

Hello again, dear f-list!

How're you? I'd like to keep up to date with you but every passing day seems harder, with thesis and lessons and all... Still I'm hopeful enough to think I'll regain some balance some time in the near future, who knows.

Lately I've been kind of lethargic and too focused on working. I'd like to finish my thesis for june next year, which means some days I'm a bundle of stress while others I'm all 'no worries, everything's gonna be all right'. It's kind of distressing in general -_- Luckily my friends arrive every now and then to take me out and prevent me from going crazy.

The most I've been doing in my leisure time is dust my ACD books and lurk around the Sherlock Holmes' comms when I find the energy to remain in front of my laptop at the end of the day. And just when I thought I had overcome the holmesian fandom, Guy Ritchie's movie appears in all its slashiest glory and there I go again. Not that I'm complaining, mind you *g* )

In other news, I just bought a lovely wallet, handmade by the talented [livejournal.com profile] louiselux with a Pride and Prejudice book cover from a 1813 edition. I'm pleased as punch X3

By the way, if you didn't watch the short film The Butterfly Circus yet, you absolutely must! Beautiful piece of work ♥ The story is an ode to personal overcoming but every single one of the characters is so full of beauty is overwhelming. It's around 20 min. long so there are two parts on YouTube:

Hope this is the end of my hiatus~

-I'm in France again. Researching at the library all day and revising the only part of my PhD that seems to progress.

-French people like my field of study very much and I could receive financing in the future (which I can't believe just yet, too good to be true).

-Tomorrow I'll spend the afternoon in a new 'manga-cafe' with a fellow worker.

-Trees are wonderful: all red, yellow and orange ♥
Though it looks like people here don't get why I think they're the prettiest thing in this city.

-Two tempting readings are waiting for me. One is The Mechanics of the Heart. It looks beautiful! in a Tim Burton way. The other's Murder Mysteries by Neil Gaiman and Craig Russell.

-I watched SPN "Changing Channels". What can I say? I LOVE this show XD

My back and neck are killing me. I'm so tired! But things are going well. I hope to recover this weekend and maybe find the time to make a proper update :)

Hope you're doing well! ♥

Appearances.

That's all that matters when you work at university. It's not important if you have to fill in a bunch of forms for nothing; the important thing is that you have signed them. And that the department head has signed them too. There.

When this morning I was asked to sign a form with subjects I'm supposed to teach this course, I was asked to submit a form I should have filled in months ago. A form my boss should have given me. But nope, she didn't remember the damn form. "It doesn't matter" she says, "go back to the office and sign the new form. Don't worry".

So I don't worry. I go to the office but they don't let me sign anything. "Come back to your boss and ask again for the previous form".

My boss insists that there's no need for that but finally she goes to ask herself. "Ok", says the guy at the office. "Your boss is wrong but here you are. Sign here and tomorrow you bring the previous form signed by the head department".

Ok.

And when I think everything's fine (after two hours of going here and there), I find out the damn form is for nothing! I'm still a grant holder and current law does not admit yet that grant holders teach theoretical lessons. So we're listed in subjects but we won't be acknowledged in RL and maybe we won't even teach all that lessons (which I really hope so).

Conclusion: the form is utterly useless.

Still, tomorrow I have to get the head department to sign my form and I have to write a lesson's plan for the subjects I supposedly will but actually can't teach.

I guess somewhere, someone sleeps peacefully thinking about the brilliant system they created.

At least the weekend on the beach was great :)

I'm going to the beach for the weekend and if everything's fine, we'll still have summertime :)

Roadtrip, friends, good weather, sun, delicious food and some tequila in the evening.

Yeah, I'm ending the week much better than it began.

Hope you have a nice weekend too ♥

Excavation has already finished for me this year. Surprisingly, it's been great to be in charge of a part of the works. I wouldn't mind trying it again next year. And I think that maybe I should have remained also this week (my boss has familiar difficulties this summer and she can't be there) but weeks before I knew it, I had already paid for a travel. So well, they'll survive perfectly without me.

That's been my working place these last days.

Tomorrow I catch a flight to Dublin. I'll be there with my friends till sunday and you can't imagine how much I want to. I really can't complain because I spend a great part of the year traveling around, but I so rarely have a trip with my people -and on vacation!- that I spend the summer looking forward to it.

It'll probably be raining all week but YAY!

I R E L A N D! :D
kaoticwords: (58 Present)
Sheesh, it's been a while! I've been trying to put my life in order a bit and finally I'm on my way to France again, just to try and get serious about my PhD -last time it worked! I'll stay in Bordeaux for a month, which means my luggage is killing me today: I really don't know how to travel light, meh -_-

Regretfully, I have not many interesting things to tell, apart from the fact that last thursday was Book's Day. Still one of my favourite days of the year: good weather, discount books all around, friends and holiday!

I bought On the Road by J. Kerouac, L'Amant by M. Duras (will see how my French is going...) and Dead Until Dark by Charlene Harris -you know, True Blood's original book. I just started this one and looks great!

Welcome back to my life, vampires' books~ *g*

On the other hand, Supernatural is eating my brains XD I'm still at the beginning of season four and although I'm a bit spoiled, I might have no nails by the end of this season...

Hope you're doing fine, f-list! I guess I'll have many things to read this week :)

Note to self: Should visit more frequently the north of Spain, it's beautiful!

Carnival

Feb. 20th, 2009 10:22 pm
kaoticwords: (Denial)
I spent most of the evening trying to find a good pair of wings for tomorrow and it's been tough, to say the least. I should have decided earlier what I wanted because today everybody was like crazy buying in the costumes shops! I didn't think Carnival was so popular here...

But look who's talking ^^;
Tomorrow I'm going to a costume party at the funfair. At first, we were going to dress up as gangsters but in the end, most of my friends don't want to dress up. That left me alone with my best friend, who is going as a gangster with her dancing class group. So I've messed up a bit my initial idea and this is what I have now:

And if people ask me who or what I'm supposed to be, well, I'll probably tell them I'm the conscience or the tempter of a gangster... I really don't think they'll catch what a "Crowley" is.

I can't believe January is ending already!
I passed great part of this month trying to catch up seriously with work and succeeding only partially. Which is not bad, I guess, but not all that good either. I need to get more serious about it, only I'm going through one of those periods when I feel determined one day, and bored and tired the next one.

It could just be winter.

Fortunately, yesterday was holiday and I was lucky enough to be free today too. I hadn't realized I needed something like a one-day road trip with my friends to feel better. And even though it's not the same to do it in summer as in winter -even when we dont' have snow all around, don't know why it's so comforting to sit in the car and go somewhere in good company. Pass village after village while talking about nothing in particular or listening to music and find a cozy place to eat later.

Now that I think about it, there's something very attractive about road trips. Not for nothing I'm in love with three fandoms that have a car and the road as inherent part of the plot and characters~
kaoticwords: (Eternity)
Busy these last days. I'd like to say it was mostly because of Epiphany and the return to normal life but it was also because of the death of one of my best friends' father. It's been quite a hard blow for all of us.

This kind of events make you even more aware that life is too short, so it's better to think about the positive things, those being all the happy meetings I had this week. For one thing, I was able to contact (and be contacted by) some of the people I met in Italy years ago, and thankfully they're all ok :) And on the other hand, I got a lot of lovely moments and presents for Epiphany. I'm specially happy with the three comics I received and the DVD of Queen's concert in Montreal ♥

So far I've read Death by Neil Gaiman, which I was waiting eagerly, and I've loved it. The other two are Spanish titles -I think the one titled Jazz Maynard looks very promising. And about the concert, if you watched it, you already knew it's fucking awesome! I simply have no words XD

My friends also gave me a pretty set of sake, green and white tea and a lovely evening, so after all the dark moments of this past week, fortunately there's also a good amount of things to smile for.

First thing I have to thank the New Year for is being alive and in one piece. Seriously.

Yesterday night, right after the New Year began, a bloody asshole of a driver ignored a sign and almost crashed into me (very badly indeed). That bastard is the only one I hope doesn't have a bright year. Later, he even overtook me running through a red light, when there was no space enough to overtake!

I can't believe I was as calm as a rock. When I got out of the car, however, I began to think about it and I had to make a big effort to enjoy the rest of the night.

Which in the end wasn't a difficult task at all~

Dinner with my family was quite alright and comfy, and we finish on time to eat the 12 grapes. It wouldn't be the first year we have to stop dinner at 12am to eat the grapes, drink a toast to the New Year and get back to dinner ^^;;. I'm quite proud of ourselves XD

It was later when the car incident occurred, just when I was on my way to meeting my friends. It was funny because when I arrived very late it was only one of my friends and me... Deserters! Even when they had a good cause for not comming... But who'd have guessed that we'd have a great night! With rum, alcohol-free beer and dancing till morning XD My feet still hurt but I'm happy.

Hope you all had a great New Year's Eve too! ♥

Beautiful place of work but incredibly tiring: my neck aches and I'm freezing but it seems I'm getting some work done so yay! Sometimes I need to get away from home to find time for my dissertation and database.
~Pic~ )

Yesterday I even went out in the evening and try not to get lost in the city. I found out "my" apartment is near a great comic store, an oriental bookshop and the city center! And I can go walking! *g* In the end, victim of consumerism, I bought two volumes of manga, a book of Zen tales and haikus and a big and heavy book about The Most Beautiful Bibles in History that might have been designed by Aziraphale himself XD Its cheap price left me open-mouthed and salivating *lol*. There're two other ones that will be in my Christmas wish-list even if can't find the time to read them...

I'm scare of myself for the day I decide go shopping clothes...

The night was weird enough that I had dinner at McDonald, and that must be the oddest thing it happened to me since... I can't remember -last time I went there they gave me a Little Mermaid figure with my happy meal for the film's premiere @_@;

Tonight I come back home for the weekend.
Hope you're having a happy week-ending~

Well well, remember I had to do my driving licence exam?
I passed it!! Yay!! I can't believe it!

Regretfully, after the exam I had the terrible idea of trying my father's car... And I thought I had learned to drive... I'm afraid I'll need some time before I can really drive that car -the only one I have for now *sigh*.

Now that I think about it, it's been quite a busy weeks. All fun, that's true, but incredible tiring. The more important holidays of my city were last week, which meant two friends came to stay with me -and as my place is really small, G arrived before the weekend and M just after G went back home: 12 days of lovely hostess activity but no time at all for rest.

It's weird but lately I think my RL has overcome considerably my life. Not that that's a bad thing at all. Guess it's a kind of balance for the times I have to go abroad alone.

In the meanwhile I have a lot of photos to sort. Posting here the cutest ones -about the duck rubber race XD- and those unprecedented -a.k.a. me in a kimono instead of the traditional Aragon costume ^^;

The yellow mass is coming~ )

In the end my ducky didn't win anything. I don't understand... He got such a pretty number...

And now for the traditional costumes thing: )

I can finally say that

I'm officially a researcher!! \^o^/

One week ago I presented my thesis and got the highest mark X3
That only means that I can keep on working to get a PhD if I want and so, for now, that's what I'm gonna do -but who knows when I'll finish it...

Right now I'm spending some days enjoying life. I even began my driving lessons! I can't believe it! And gosh, I like driving XD

Actually, I'm kind of hyperactive lately *checking sugar doses*:
finished my summer readings, bought some new ones (like that Oscar Wilde and a Death of No Importance), spent some days in Barcelona, reformatted my old laptop, adopted a rubber duck... Yep, a cute ducky like this one!

Ducky will take part in rubber-duck race on 5th October to raise funds for a NGO. I have faith in him: after all, he's number 5030 and a combination of Gojyo and Sanzo can't be bad at all XD

Tomorrow it's Expo's last day. I don't want to imagine how many people will be there but hell, I'm going too XD

Ps: to [livejournal.com profile] riot_of_flowers: Didn't forget about the meme. I'm a woman of my word ;) Just wait and see ♥

Ps: to [livejournal.com profile] megamaniaco: Messenger will be. Maybe next week.
I promise :)
kaoticwords: (Yuko)
I can't believe it's july already! It means I've been two weeks doing almost nothing. I guess I had almost forgotten how awesome is to have free time day and night XD

I visited the Expo 2008 and got a funny passport to stamp at the different stands. Regretfully the better ones had queues so long that we had to wait for an hour or more to enter. In the end we visited the ones with less people, that is, Egypt, Nepal, Mongolia, Vietnam, Thailand, India, Brazil and Greece. And even so we were waiting at least 45 minutes for Greece and 30 for Brazil and Egypt! Next time we're definitely seeing Japan and another bunch of countries, and if we're lucky, maybe the Aquarius too.

The Bridge Pavilion let me astounded! Zaha Hadid's design is amazing and no matter what some people say, I'm glad all the new buildings and bridges will remain after the Expo.

Pics of the day -but don't expect many photos of the pavilions' interior because it was ridiculously difficult to find some light on the inside... )

The swimming pool has been another great pastime. And I'd rather not count all the time I've spent at one cafe or another with my friends :D Or the things I've bought! *lol* you know, there was this nice red and black bag I saw days ago...

Today however I feel all kinds of lazy and haven't written the report I should have written for my next journey. I'm going to Rome next saturday!! To take some photos of the ancient roads and, officially, to go to the library -though I reserve myself the unofficial right to decide how many days I'll spend in the library :P

I actually came back from la France one week ago.

I couldn't tell, however, if the last seven days were long or short: all I've done I'm doing is correct page after page, reading every word again and touching up bibliography. Ah, and being friendly with photoshop 'cause in the end I have more than 62 pages with illustrations. Better, my initial total count of 130-150 pages has suddenly increased to 200 @_@;;;

I really wanted to say something about Bordeaux.

Maybe tomorrow.

Or the next day I look at the calendar and realize what day I'm living in...

One more week and I'll be free for a while, yesh!

I've spent the weekend trying to recover from last week's stress but the good point is I've almost finished the dissertation's last chapter, which means I just have to finish it and write a good intro and conclusions. It also means I've spent two days watching anime and deciding that

-Junjou Romantica is very cute and I'm definitely hooked ^^

-Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle anime is not bad at all. I refused to buy the manga because I'd rather have CLAMP finishing their other works but after all I'm liking the anime *sigh*

-I finally found the time to watch Bus Gamer. The first ep left me squeeing XD I hope to download the rest soon~

-and yet Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is teh awesome XD

I've been buying too *g* Pretty summer clothes and a shiny and lightweight new laptop HP Pavilion tx2120es

My biggest worry right now it's to find out how I'm going to install Windows XP in a computer with Windows Vista...
