Feliciano López shows his best backhand
Feliciano López is part of the new wave of young sportsmen whose exploits have managed to bring off Spanish tennis' best results in years. Even with the hangover after winning the Davis Cup -"it's a rush that will last", he agrees-, this young tennis player adds his name to those of his other mates, like Nadal, Verdasco or Ferrer, with whom he shares his skill and his increasing interest in fashion, as if they were a future top-models team.
"Tennis is the most important thing for us, we're very content with our results. If we also catch people's attention, that's beyond our control. I don't care at all what kind of attention we can catch", he says, though he admits he's as coquettish in the court as out of it. "I like to watch my figure but I don't get obsessive about it. In court, it's evident I like to be elegant, like any other player, but even more out of court". If we use the same comparative method, we can figure he'll be as competitive in life as he's in game. "I'm rather calm in my common life. In general, I don't mind things too much, but inside the court I only think about achieve victory, like everybody else", he assures.
He worked hard to achieve professional acknowledgment but, as we can observe, Feliciano López doesn't mind to play the occasional model. May be he's a bit of an exhibitionist and he likes exploiting his charm? "They always ask me that but it's not important for me. I think I'm a normal guy. If people like me, fucking great; and if not, all the same. It's not as if I think about it every minute."
Anyway, for some time now, Feliciano has decided to take better care of his figure. However he admits he cares more for the importance of his figure in mass media as an example to follow than to make the cover of fashion magazines. "Tennis is a smart sport but first, and other than my appearance, there's my public image. I know there are a lot of people who follow our example -especially, a lot of children- so I usually try to act with decorum, to behave properly", he adds. To combine sport and fashion might be, then, a future option.
“I never considered it. I’ve met some people who work in that industry and they haven’t spoken to me so well about it. I’ve been into sport since I was a little kid and, in the future, I’d rather stay linked to this world than to any other.” At the moment, it’s not practice that he lacks, because we’ve not only seen him in photoshoots, but also on the catwalk, playing mannequin. “The first time, it was pretty hard, because it’s something different to what I’m used to do, but now I’m more at ease,” he admits. Because, sometimes, it’s more difficult to face a camera than a rival on the court. “I’m not really used to it and it’s hard to stay in the same position all the time, to follow the instructions of the photographer, to mind the look’s direction, the body’s position, and so on. It’s the typical things about a photoshoot that, when you’re more experienced, I guess you don’t find so difficult, but for us, sportsmen, it’s really tiresome.”
Throughout the Internet, there’s a flow of videos and pictures of the tennis player shirtless, taken between changes in the matches or in the training sessions. “It’s a normal thing, tennis has changed a lot. You can find not only videos of mine, but also of many other players. Fans and people who assist the training sessions take advantage of the tiniest chance to record them and upload them to the Internet, but I’m not really bothered by it. It’s always flattering to attract people’s attention, I like people following me (I assume he means “my career” not him personally), it doesn’t make me restless.”
Judging by the far-fetched comments about the intimate details of the tennis player that run through the Net, at least in the clothing matter, the question was a must: does a sportsman prefer briefs or boxers? “I think most of us use briefs. There are some players who wear boxers, but it’s more for a matter of habit than for comfort.” It’s probably a sportsman quirk, then, something this player from Toledo (Spain) is not completely free from, since he admits not being able to go to the court without having showered first and having his hair wet, it being totally essential, in his eyes, to succeed. Talking about fashion, he’s not excessively picky about what to wear. “I’m quite simple in my clothing style, there’re always jeans and T-shirts in my suitcase and I don’t have a special beauty secret. I’m quite hopeless in that sense.” Feliciano contributed with the perfect finale to a golden year for the Spanish tennis, but there’s no way he’s going to rest on his laurels. 2009 brings him new dares, personally as well as professionally. “In a personal level, I couldn’t stand that something bad happened to my family or friends, but talking professionally, a dream for the next year would be without a doubt to win Wimbledon.” And, if given the choice, our dream would be that he showed us the trophy in another article like this one.
We hope you enjoy!
